Biology Undergraduate Student

Homepage

My name is Diego Taquiri and I am an undergraduate student in Biology at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia. Collaboration is key for early career researchers; therefore, I created this web page to connect with people with similar interests and career objectives amid this social distancing times.

Research Interests

My main field of interest is aging research with a focus on rejuvenation strategies. Aging related health decline is the main risk factor to leading world diseases such as cancer, heart failure, Alzheimer, etc. Interventions targeting this biological process have not only accomplished to delay the aging process itself, but to reverse it. Among the latter, the most exciting to me are epigenetic reprogramming, elimination of senescent cells and restoration of young systemic factors. Here are some recent research examples I find fascinating:

Blood factors transfer beneficial effects of exercise on neurogenesis and cognition to the aged brain. Horowitz AM, Fan X, et al. Science, 2020.
Senolytic CAR T cells reverse senescence-associated pathologies. Amor C, Feucht J, Leibold J, et al. Nature, 2020.
In Vivo Amelioration of Age-Associated Hallmarks by Partial Reprogramming. Ocampo A, Reddy P, Martinez-Redondo P, et al. Cell, 2016.
Mahmoudi S, Xu L, Brunet A. Turning back time with emerging rejuvenation strategies. Nat Cell Biol, 2019.
Career goals

My principal long-term career goal is a tenured professor position at a R1 research intensive university. My short and mid terms goals are built around this path; however, I find teaching intensive and research administration positions equally interesting. Nevertheless, the process of taking the right decisions and the journey itself is fulfilling to me, and my main focus. Here is my current general career plan with some ideal examples:

PhD student. For example, in the PhD program of Biology of Aging at University of Southern California.
Postdoctoral research fellow. For example, in the Wyss-Coray Research Group at Stanford University.
Tenure-Track Assistant Professor. For example, as Dr. Saul Villeda at University of California San Francisco.
Tenured Associate Professor. For example, as Dr. David Sinclair at Harvard Medical School.
Personal Interests

In my free time, I enjoy learning how to develop as a scientist. Top researcher’s advice provides guidance about where to invest our time and the main skills to improve. The principal growth areas I have identified are research skills, career path knowledge, social relationships, productivity pillars and science of science. Here are some resources I like because they produced major changes in my decision taking:

Skill Development in Graduate Education. Parker R. Mol Cell, 2012.
Cultivating the Human Dimension in Research. Antes AL, DuBois JM. Mol Cell, 2018.
Nurturing Undergraduate Researchers in Biomedical Sciences. Li J, Luo L. Cell, 2020.
Good Work If You Can Get It: How to Succeed in Academia. Brennan J. Johns Hopkins University Press, 2020.
Experience

My work emphasis is project contribution. Time management skills allow me to commit long term consistently and reliably; furthermore, strategical planning let me focus early on the right work. I enjoy team work and collaboration, and I am always motivated to learn new skills. Here are some recent projects I have worked on:

Research Intern, 2020. Proliferation and Cellular Regeneration Lab, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.
Writer, 2020. The Novice Scientist Magazine, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.
Vice-President, 2019. IEEE Student Branch, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.
Founder, 2019. Asociación de Estudiantes de Ingeniería Biomédica, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú-Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.
